Up to 50% of Nitrogen Fertiliser can be lost due to volatilisation, leaching and denitrification.

One of the immediate threats to loss of nitrogen is volatilisation.

This happens when Urease enzymes found in soils and crop residues react with urea fertiliser, releasing nitrogen in the form of ammonia. Nitrogen can also be lost as enzymes in the soil break it down into nitrates that escape through leaching and is washed below the root zone during rainfall ending up in water courses and our drinking water.

More nitrogen can be lost through denitrification; this happens when bacteria found in damp and waterlogged conditions steal oxygen from nitrates, reducing them to nitrous oxide which as a gas emission has a major effect on climate change.
